Simply Modern

Modern Beach House is a carefully curated home decor shop and interior design studio on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. We specialize in both residential new construction and full scale renovations. Our team works seamlessly together to create a family-type experience. Our design aesthetic can be described as modern with a vintage twist.

Our founder, Nicole Peters, started her interior design studio in 2007. Nicole is a versatile interior designer, known for her fresh approach to traditional coastal decoration. Growing up on the Outer Banks with a father in the construction industry gave Nicole an early insight into coastal living and interiors. Over time, this has developed into her signature modern coastal style.

Nicole’s skills at sourcing unique products led her to open a shop, Modern Beach House, in 2017. Nicole has carefully built a small, dedicated team that feels more like family. Whether shopping for your home or looking for interior design support, Modern Beach House offers the insight, knowledge and dedication to bring an elegant, coastal flair to your home.

Meet the team

Nicole Peters
Owner & Founder

Nicole started her interior design studio, Nicole Peters Interiors, in 2007, and is renowned for her signature modern coastal interiors. Her eye for unique products led her to open a shop, Modern Beach House, offering a curated collection of beautiful home goods. Starting out in the historic shopping center in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, the shop has grown over the years. It is now in a beloved part of Duck, NC, the same location that Nicole once caught the school bus as a child.

Growing up on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, with a father in the construction business, Nicole was always drawn to interior design. She attended East Carolina University, later moving to California to attend Orange Coast College. Returning to the east coast, she gained hands-on experience as a Design Assistant before starting her own business. Nicole can turn her hand to any design style but specializes in a special fusion of modern coastal aesthetics, with a vintage twist. Over the years, Nicole has built a small, dedicated team that feels much more like family.

With a lifelong passion for the coast, Nicole resides on the Outer Banks. She loves bringing local artisan work into the shop and her projects, and also makes frequent trips to source one-off vintage finds and special items for her clients and customers. In her down-time you can find her snuggled up with her dog, Vader, daydreaming in the streets of NYC or snowboarding with her husband, Jeremy, in Colorado.

Suzanne Ortiz
Administrative Assistant

Suzanne is the glue that holds MBH together. Being in the business for over 30 years, she is well accomplished in administration. As an administrator with Modern Beach House, her tasks include collecting/managing contact information and communicating with builders, vendors, subs, and clients, and organizing furniture inventory into current job budgets. Her sociable personality and great organizational skills are a vital asset to our team.

Suzanne lives on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, while her two children and grandchildren reside in Orlando, FL, and Los Angeles, CA.  In her spare time, she enjoys going to the beach, traveling, reading, gardening and spending time with friends and family.

Marin Edwards
Design Assisstant

Marin is from Charlottesville, Virginia. Her love for the beach led her to the Hampton Roads area to attend Virginia Wesleyan University. She graduated with a business degree and competed on the volleyball team for four years. Growing up in the mountains and moving to the coast inspires her to bring the outdoors in. As a child she would reimagine the rooms in her home and she has been practicing design ever since. Her favorite parts of the job are taking risks with different elements and hunting down treasures at antique shops and trade shows. Marin believes a home should feel unique; full of stories and soul. She appreciates simplicity and aesthetics that feel welcoming and inviting; using natural elements and neutral color schemes. She values meaningful pieces from family, and loves to incorporate them into interior design for a collected-over-time feel.

Marin and her husband Sam completed a year-long home renovation together and spend their time with their Golden Retriever (Barley) and Tabby cat (Fin). They enjoy hiking, day trips to the beach, coffee dates, farmers market trips, cooking and hosting dinner parties.

Katie Kennis
Content Creator

Born and raised on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Katie has developed a deep understanding and love for the coast that infuses all she offers both personally and professionally. Her attention to detail, motivation, and communication skills ensure quality work across multiple areas of Modern Beach House. Katie joined us in 2019 and fuels her passion for interior design through the shop’s online content creation and photography.

Katie co-founded and later sold Village Yoga, a social entrepreneurship and top Outer Banks yoga studio in Duck, NC. She then shifted into real estate, as a broker and short term rental investor with her husband Johnny. Intertwining her real estate profession with interior design at Modern Beach House keeps Katie excited for her work and endlessly inspired by her team. When not designing her family’s personal rental properties, you can find Katie surfing beautiful beaches, creating memories with Johnny and their daughter Maeve, and spending winters at their second home in Costa Rica.
